Round One Coverage

First round play of the 2006 Pacific Invitational started this morning at Brookside Country Club. The 12-team field was greeted by wonderful weather and great course conditions. Eighteen holes later BYU had made their way to the top of the leaderboard as they headed into the clubhouse as the day one leader; led by Danny Summerhays’ 66.

The Cougars came into the Pacific Invitational as the favorite to win it all and after the first round they looked intent on doing just that. Summerhays’ 66 was enough to get the ball rolling for BYU and Robbie Fillmore and Nick Becker’s rounds of 69 just added fuel to the fire as the Cougars jumped out to a one-stroke lead over UC Santa Barbara.

“It was a good setup out there today, pretty wide open off the tees,” said Summerhays. “I haven’t been shooting in the sixties to open any tournaments so that was a goal to get down under my usual 70 or 71 mark.”

Summerhays’ opening round six-under puts him atop the individual leaderboard going in to round two with John Chin of UC Irvine and Ryan Keefe of UC Santa Barbara just a stroke off the pace.

With UC Santa Barbara a stroke behind BYU for the team pace and Charlotte at eight under schools look to sort out the leaderboard come day two. Eight schools are under par after the opening 18 and host school Pacific looks to make a move on their home course after sophomore Charlie Van Sicklen fired a first round 68 but failed to get support from his teammates.

Tee times for round two start at 8:00 am from #1 and #10 Tuesday morning.
