They led by a stroke after one round, five strokes after two and finished it off ahead by 11. Individually it was Summerhays the clubhouse leader after round one… and round two. But Clay Ogden closed with a 66 and 67 and surpassed Summerhays by a single stroke in the end. Just goes to show that for the BYU Cougars regardless of what happened throughout the week the end product remains the same.
The Cougars simply played the kind of golf it takes to win a tournament. Seven rounds in the sixties, two by a freshman and four split down the middle by Ogden and Summerhays.
“It doesn’t get more exciting in college golf then that final round did for us,” said BYU assistant coach Todd Miller. “To have three guys in it down the stretch, with neither Clay or Danny having won a college tournament yet… you’re rooting for both of them. It’s great.”
And great it was. While Summerhays held the outright lead after one but shared room atop the leaderboard it was Ogden who made a push at the end to take the title. The Cougars ended the 2006 Pacific Invitational Wednesday afternoon at Brookside 11 strokes ahead of UNC Charlotte and 22 in front of UC Santa Barbara.
Brookside’s open layout but tough pin placements and thick rough balanced out Wednesday morning as a steady rain soaked the Stockton country club early on.
“It was great to come from behind and get the win,” said Ogden. “I’ve been in events like this in amateur tournaments but never in college. It’s great that we were all there at the end.”
