Team Profile: BYU
BYU, Once Again at the Top of Their Game

The BYU men’s golf team is off to a great 2006/2007 season. The No. 23 Cougars are working hard to prove that they will return once-again to the NCAA tournament.

The Cougars have been a team with a handhold over the MWC Conference as well as staple in the NCAA tournament. The 2004/2005 BYU team finished fourth at the NCAA tournament while the 2005/2006 team finished the tournament in 15th. This year’s team is also expected to make an impressive showing at the tournament.

Already this season, the Cougars have showed they can play. BYU placed second at their first tournament, the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. They also placed fourth at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. BYU tied for 12th at the PING/Golfweek Preview, a tournament of those in contention for the NCAA tournament. While the Cougars are playing impressive, they are still hoping to improve.

"We believe we are one of the best teams in the nation, and to this point in the season, I don't think our effort has matched our expectations," said Daniel Summerhays, a junior from Farmington, Utah. "We need to work a little harder and raise our game before the winter break."

Summerhays, one of the BYU top players, has made a big impact on the team. Daniel Summerhays has had three top-15 finishes and has also tied an NCAA record. He shot a 60 on the par-70 course at the Golden Horseshoe Country Club. The 10-under-par round broke course records on the fairways where the 2007 NCAA Men's Golf Tournament will be played.

BYU seniors Nick Becker, Jake Ellison and Clay Ogden are also expected to lead the Cougars to another tournament showing.

Lead by seasoned head coach Bruce Brockbank, expectations are high. Brockbank, has lead the Cougars for 15 years, including numerous conference championships and NCAA appearances.
